Going Comando

Comando G, Vinos de Madrid, La Bruno de Rozas, 2018

Comando G Viticultores was founded by Daniel Gómez Landi and Fernando Garcia. The duo has two role models: the Burgundian vineyard classification system and Chateau Rayas’ dedication to Grenache. Their home territory consists of extremely old Garnacha (Granache) vineyards in the Madrid appellation.

This is their ‘village’ wine from vineyards around Rozas de Puerto Real. It’s a lively wine that needs 2-3 hours to unfold.

The nose displays forest floor and vegetable stew like Pinot, or Bourgogne to be more precise, but the fruit profile is different. Sweet, almost candied cherries rather than sour-sweet berries. Also, with Grenache, it sometimes feels to me as though the is portraying a fruit profile rather than actually living it. That’s not a criticism because it’s actually one of the things that I find endearing about Grenache, that feeling that it's a slightly vain stage actor with a lot of makeup on.
